Tackling the Sustainability Challenge for Ship Supply

The Sustainability Working Group of the NVVS is reflecting on how the ship supply sector addresses environmenal aspects

In this blog entry, find out how the Sustainability Working Group of the Dutch Ship Supply Association, part of OCEAN, is dedicated to navigating new sustainability laws and regulations, such as the EU Deforestation Regulation and the Fit for 55 package, by fostering compliance and practical solutions through member collaboration, engagement with local authorities, and a commitment to international corporate social responsibility.

Greetings from the Sustainability Working Group of the Dutch Ship Supply Association, a proud member of OCEAN. As we sail into the waters of the second half of 2024, the sustainability landscape for ship supply is undergoing profound shifts. With new laws and regulations emerging at a rapid pace, our collective focus, including all our members, remains steadfast on ensuring compliance while fostering workable solutions for all.

Undoubtedly, one of the greatest challenges we face is the wave of new sustainability-related laws soon to come into force. From the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) to the Fit for 55 package, and the introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the seas of compliance are becoming more intricate to navigate. These regulations demand adherence and require us to innovate and adapt our practices to meet evolving standards.

At the heart of our mission lies the commitment to make sustainability practical for our members. We deeply value the complexities they face in balancing environmental responsibility with operational efficiency. Therefore, we actively seek and highly appreciate the input we receive from our members. Their insights are not just valuable, but crucial, enabling us to initiate discussions with local governments, leveraging practical examples to shape policy frameworks that are both effective and feasible.

Our collaboration extends beyond industry boundaries, as we engage with local authorities such as customs to streamline processes and ensure smooth implementation of regulations. This strong partnership, built on our collective commitment to sustainability, reinforces our shared determination and facilitates the transition towards greener practices.

International Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is another cornerstone of our efforts. By aligning with global standards and best practices, we aim to foster a culture of responsible business conduct within the ship supply industry. Through initiatives that promote transparency, ethical sourcing, and community engagement, we strive to uphold the principles of CSR and contribute positively to society.

As we approach the deadline for the EU Deforestation Regulation on 30/12/2024, we are reminded of the urgency of our mission. This regulation underscores the EU's commitment to combatting deforestation and associated environmental impacts. By proactively addressing deforestation risks in the supply chain, we can safeguard biodiversity and promote sustainable land use practices.

In conclusion, the journey towards ship supply sustainability is marked by challenges and opportunities. As Dutch Ship Supply Association members, we embrace these challenges with determination and optimism. We will navigate these waters towards a more sustainable future for all through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to responsible practices.

Sincerely,

The Sustainability Working Group
